SEARCHABLE COURSE MANUALS? WITH LINKS?!? OH, YES.
TWO CONVENIENT, INFORMAL RESOURCES

Kyle DeJute

The transcribing teams at APH have cobbled together two convenient, informal resources that we would like to share with you. The resources are 1) a searchable PDF of the current (09-15-2021) content of the Provisional Revised Nemeth Course Manual and 2) a searchable PDF of the current (09-15-2021) content of the Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribing – UEB Edition, 2015.

  1. The PDF “0 Combined Provis Nemeth Manual - TOC linked” contains all the current materials of the Provisional Revised Nemeth Course Manual (the developing UEB-with- Nemeth course) and has the entries in its table of contents linked to the appropriate places in the document.
  2. The PDF “00 Combined IMBT materials_2021-05-25 - TOC linked” contains all the current materials of the Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribing – UEB Edition, 2015 (the literary UEB course) and has the entries in its table of contents linked to the appropriate places in the document.

These materials are up to date as of 9/15/2021. They are convenient because each PDF contains all the parts of a course in one searchable document and because every single entry in their tables of contents is linked to the page on which that entry begins.

From NFB’s page for the Mathematics Braille Transcribing Course, you can always access the individual searchable PDFs that make up the developing course on UEB with Nemeth. Similarly, you can always access the individual searchable PDFs that make up the NLS course on literary UEB from NFB’s page for the Literary Braille Transcribing Course. We encourage you to check those NFB pages periodically for updates to the manuals.

For information about both NLS courses (Nemeth and literary UEB), you can watch the APH webinar Navigation of Braille Certification. (Discussion of Nemeth starts at time 35:00; discussion of literary UEB starts at time 42:00.)

We acknowledge that the Nemeth *Course* is *not* the Nemeth *Code*. Neither is the literary UEB course the UEB rules. But sometimes we refer to the course manuals for examples of a code in action and further explanation of how a code works. We hope that having these resources will make your braille ventures a little easier.
